Delicate Series

‘Delicate Series’ explored the disjuncture between unpredictable weather patterns and one’s desire to be in control of physical faculties in order to ‘catch a wave’. The body of work consists of projecting layers of data and visuals on the wall, allowing a continuous tracing and retracing process on a transparent film. The tracing components in-between a swell-map and weather reports lean on a semiotic metaphor whereby the articulation of in-between spaces become symbolic of non-linguistic communication. This method attempts to examine the dynamic relationship between the past experience of catching waves and the science of waves. From a distance, the work resembles a correlated and fluid network of water. When viewed close, a constant play of concealing and revealing is observed between the overlapping gestures and accumulated layers of pigments. The series of work also aims to highlight the level of emotionality surrounding weather reports.

Delegate, an Ilam/Elam Exchange programme.

Delegation exists as a means of bestowing authority upon a single person to act as a voice/representative for an entire group. The act of delegation depends upon the agreement of the group to select and commission the delegate to speak on behalf of individuals forming the group. Thus a social transaction takes place whereby ‘the group’ empowers an individual to represent ‘a group’ of individuals. The delegate functions as a sign in place of the totality of the group.

Ilam Curator, Keir Leslie, conceived the theme to curate a joint venture between Elam and Ilam post-graduate students based on Bourdieu’s theory of delegation. Elizabeth Brookbanks was delegated the task of curating an exhibition of works from Elam students. Both exhibitions from Ilam and Elam will travel to respective city centres. The Elam delegation is due to open at Ilam Art School in Canterbury on Tuesday 18th June.
